KidsDay 2004
A Day-Long Celebration!
Thursday, June 10, 2004
FREE activities for children and parents from 11am-4pm

Presented by the Rotunda Gallery, the Brooklyn Historical Society, the Brooklyn Heights Branch of the Brooklyn Public Library, and the New York Transit Museum

KidsArt 2004 On Thursday, June 10 with KidsDay, enjoy a full day of free workshops, tours and performances in the gallery and throughout Brooklyn Heights. This annual event is co-presented by the Rotunda Gallery, the Brooklyn Heights Branch of the Brooklyn Public Library, the New York Transit Museum and the Brooklyn Historical Society.

The Rotunda Gallery's KidsArt exhibit and KidsDay activities are sponsored by Astoria Federal Savings & Verizon.


ALL DAY LONG YOU CAN:

View KidsArt, the Rotunda Gallery's annual exhibition of artworks created by children participating in the Gallery's Education Program, 11am-4pm. This kids-eye view of contemporary art features drawing, painting, sculpture, and installations by New York City School children.

Explore the Children's Room of the Brooklyn Heights Branch of the Brooklyn Public Library. Browse the library's collection of books, magazines, videos, and audio books. Use a computer, register for library cards, view children's artwork, and learn about upcoming programs. The library will be open to the public from 1pm-6 pm.

NEW YORK TRANSIT MUSEUM
Plaque Designing Workshop

Many of New York City's subway stations are decorated with colorful ceramic plaques. They are works of art that illustrate their above-ground surroundings or name the stations in bold letters. In honor of the 100th birthday of New York's subway, create your own unique ceramic plaque to represent a subway station being named after you. Ongoing 20-minute workshops for children ages 4 to 16 and parents.

Recycled Jewelry
Art Making Workshop

Using a treasure trove of recycled gems, buttons, strings and wire, children 8 and up and parents will create astounding ornamental artifacts for personal adornment. CALL FOR RESERVATIONS 718-875-4047 x16

THE BROOKLYN HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Visit the newly renovated Brooklyn Historical Society at 128 Pierrepont Street! Explore the Brooklyn Works: 400 Years of Making a Living exhibit with of brand new Family Guide available in Arabic, Chinese, English, Russian and Spanish. While you're here, meet the woman responsible for the completion of the Brooklyn Bridge, Emily Roebling (as played by a first-person interpreter). Don't forget to pick up your BHS tattoo!

Sit back, relax, and take in a fun puppet show and story telling experience.

Calder's Recycled Circus
Art Making Workshop

Create your own wire circus animals and acrobats in the style of artist Alexander Calder! Using brightly colored wire, children 8 and up and adults work together to draw a circus character and then shape it out of wire.

A musical program for children of all ages by the Jerry Joy group.

KidsArt RECEPTION and KidsDay CROWN CONTEST

End the day with a juice and cookie reception while you view the KidsArt exhibition at the Rotunda Gallery! All participants wearing their own personally designed and created headwear will be eligible for lots of fun prizes. Awards ceremony will begin at 3:15pm. Refreshments provided courtesy of Morgan Stanley.

Brooklyn Heights Branch, Brooklyn Public Library (280 Cadman Plaza West, Brooklyn, NY 11201, 718-623-7100) serves the informational, educational, and cultural needs of adults and children through its free collections, services and programs. Popular programs include the Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) Club, puzzles & games hour, toddler program, arts & crafts hour, and Friday afternoon chess club. The Children's Department is the frequent site of class visits during the school year and features a special Geography Center, collection of circulating audio-books, videos, and a new toddler corner with board books and reading chairs for caregivers. The Brooklyn Historical Society (128 Pierrepont St., Brooklyn, NY 11201) is a museum, library and history center dedicated to encouraging the exploration and appreciation of Brooklyn's rich heritage. The New York Transit Museum (Corner of Boerum Pl. & Schermerhorn St,) is home to over 100 years of transit lore and memorabilia. The Museum is housed in an authentic 1936 IND subway station that contains vintage subway and elevated cars, antique turnstiles, a working signal tower, and much more. The Museum also operates a gallery annex at Grand Central Terminal where we present changing exhibitions, and three museum stores located in Brooklyn, at Grand Central Terminal, and online. The Rotunda Gallery (33 Clinton Street, Brooklyn, NY 11201) is a not-for-profit exhibition space featuring changing exhibitions of the work of some of Brooklyn's most talented contemporary visual artists. Its education program introduces contemporary art to thousands of school children every year through hands-on workshops and in-school learning experiences.
